Wednesday at Cross Country Trail Ride

I'm glad I'm not a horse.  Ours worked hard today.  We planned to check out the cave up near Seldom Seen Bluff.  Lunch was being served out on the trail up on Jerktail Road and as the two destinations are both up North of the campground, we decided to do both.  And we did...Mike says that we were so far North, he could see the arch in St. Louis.  I think I saw Sara Palin.  We really did ride a long way today.

Rode up through the Fox Pen and out the back of the Fox Pen top past Suttons Creek and up to the Jerktail Road.  After a good lunch and fabulous homemade apple and cherry turnovers, we headed for the caves.  We were riding trails we'd never been on.  Seldom Seen Bluff is (amazingly) a bit hard to get to, but wow is it stunning.  I'm going to try to find a picture.  I left my camera in the camper today.  Duh...

We're not completely sure which of the two awesome bluffs we saw today is "Seldom Seen", but they were both maybe 200 feet high and twice or thrice as wide.  Then there was the 200 foot bluff we rode along the edge of.

Looking down was really neat; then I thought of the old horse truism, where you look, your horse will go.  So - I quit looking.  The Jack's Fork and the Current river are both fast, clean, clear rivers.  They are beautiful and equally dangerous.  They are both clear where shallow, green where deeper and black where REALLY deep.  This trip has been Jade's first experience with flowing water.  She has only tried to lay down once; not too bad for a baby.  She is only four.

The cave hollow cave was fun - we had water shoes and flash lights this time.  We walked to the point where we'd have had to crawl and decided that was far enough.  Maybe next time we'll bring ropes too.

More than six hours in the saddle; many hills climbed and wonders we'll not forget.  Good times!
